Gospel Legend Lulu Roman Dies at 78: A Life of Redemption, Laughter & Praise
Lulu Roman, beloved country gospel singer and Hee Haw star, has passed away at the age of 78. Born Bertha Louise Hable, she died peacefully at her son’s home in Bellingham, Washington, on April 23, 2025. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lulu had moved there seven months earlier to be closer to her family. No official cause of death has been announced.
Born on May 6, 1946, in Dallas, Texas, Lulu’s life was marked by both hardship and hope. She spent her early years in a Baptist orphanage, never adopted, and struggled with health issues stemming from a thyroid condition. Her teenage years were turbulent, including a period of drug use that led to a 1971 arrest for possession of marijuana, speed, LSD, and methamphetamine.
But Lulu’s story is one of remarkable transformation. In 1973, she embraced Christianity and turned her life around.
“After I gave my heart to Jesus, the Lord started working on me and making me into quite a different person than when I started,” she once said.
A Legacy in Music and Entertainment
Lulu Roman rose to national fame on CBS’s Hee Haw, where her quick wit and vibrant personality made her a fan favorite. Country music legend Buck Owens helped her land the role, recognizing her comedic timing and charm.
She later starred in the spin-off series Hee Haw Honeys (1978–1979), and over the years, she appeared in various TV shows and films. Her talents extended beyond comedy—Lulu was a celebrated gospel singer, earning a Dove Award in 1985 for her album You Were Loving Me.
She performed with country icons like Dolly Parton and George Jones, and in 1999, she was inducted into the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
In 2019, she published her heartfelt autobiography, This is My Story, This is My Song, offering a deeper look at her journey from brokenness to faith.
Final Notes
Throughout her life, Lulu used her voice to lift others. Whether through laughter or song, she always pointed people to hope. One of her most moving performances remains her heartfelt rendition of Amazing Grace.
Rest in peace, Lulu Roman. Your story—and your song—will live on.
